Big success all over the world Monopoly is one of the most successful board game on this planet. Ask anybody on the street "Tell me the names of 3 board games!", I'm quite sure you will hear "Monopoly". The first version of "Monopoly" was The Landslord's Game by Elizabeth Magie in 1904. Nowadays Monopoly is distributed by Parker, Hasbro and others all over the world.
I know Monopoly since I'm 8 years old and as a kid I liked it somehow. When I got older I got in touch with more and more other board games. I started asking myself: 'There are so many good board games out there, why do people play Monopoly?' If I look back, I have to say, that I found my favourite board games on the internet and not in local stores. I ordered them online. Why?
Where did I find my todays' favourite games?
I started reading recommendations, reviews and followed charts in the web - I found lots of interesting games.
People are not interested in board games?
I thought that most people are not really interested in board games. This is partly true. If I visit local stores, I can see many board games in the shelves! There is room for board games. Guess, what games do I find? Monopoly.
Manys boxes of Monopoly. And not only Monopoly, usually you find also some special editions like:
- Monopoly Littlest Pet Shop Edition
- Monopoly Fortnite Edition
- Monopoly Imperium Edition
- Monopoly Ultimate Banking
- Monopoly Lord of the rings
- Monopoly Super Mario Bros
- Monopoly Game of Thrones
- Monopoly Bob Ross (no joke, the painter!)
- and many many more…
So, I'm standing in the store, watching the big wall with lots of board games and see these wonderful editions of Monopoly - I could cry.
Ok, Monopoly is not the only 'bad' game, which is so succesful. (for example: Risk, Risk Lord of the rings, Risk Star Wars, Risk Harry Potter…) - I'm still crying
Yes - it's true, as a kid I had some fun with Monopoly and also my kids had some fun with some editions of this game. But it is so easy to find better games. And why does the Monopolies need so much space in my local dealers shop? I guess people like this game. A big shout out to the sales and the product marketing of Monopoly, you do a great job!
What I don't like in Monopoly
The basic mechanism is luck. You don't choose what you buy, you throw dices and usually you buy the stuff where you land. Later on you build houses, depending where you land. Or you pay when you land on the fields of your friends. You don't have to think a lot or make choices. We added some custom rules to make the game more interesting. For example, I like trading the cards.
After a long time of playing, the game ends, because a player has no money and possessions any more.
Don't get me wrong, this is my personal opinion. If you like Monopoly, just keep on playing it!
